30 Rock 3.6 “Hey, Baby, What’s Wrong” Review

It is a well-known fact that airing a one hour show has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that it gives stories more time to develop. On the other hand, some stories just end up dragging, since they get more time than is actually needed. 30 Rock has on occasion been known to feature both ends of the story. Examples of plots that would have been hurt by a shorter running time include Tracy and Frank helping Lutz to be a dirt bag and Pete & Jenna dealing with the Yip’s former case.

In the case of Jenna, it was easy to diagnose and fix the problem. We were able to watch her fix the problem in a way that turned out to be a funny story. Another factor that added some more laughter to the whole Jenna plot was the return of Dr. Spacemen. According to his assumptions, there is no field of medicine that deals with the brain. However, he later finds out that Jenna has two more nemeses and this turns the whole thing into a funny plot.

If it weren’t for the added time, we would have missed out on Tracy and the gang. We would also have missed out on all the crazy things that he and Frank do to pick up women. Other things that we could probably have missed out on include them trying to get Lutz to do things to pick up women and Lutz hitting on Liz and eating Swedish meat balls. In other words, we would have missed out on all the fun of all these layers of the story.

Having pointed out the advantages of the extra time, it is essential that we also look at the other end of the coin. The character of Avery’s mom was played by Mary Steenburgen and she seemed to have a quasi-sexual rendezvous with Jack. This was one of the moments in the show that really dragged and many wished the time had not been extended at all. The awkward tension between Mrs. Jessup and Jack was really bad. Another moment that seemed to drag on forever was the time Liz was fighting with Criss in Ikea. These moments really seemed to drag and though there were a few moments of laughter, the plot would have been much better off if the tiresome moments had been removed all together.

As has been stated, there were a few humorous moments, for example Criss’s half written Valentine’s song, which was a bit weird. Other funny moments include Liz referring to the pants down as mommy daddy sheet monster time and Jack’s accents to the UN. It was really interesting to hear Jack said that he was not hungry before the UN had bought pizza and that when it got there, he had three pieces.

The show was longer than usual and in some cases, it would have been better off short.
